I found the answer to my question. If you play on the "Wellgames" website, it connects you to a server, and you play head-to-head with another player. If you beat the other player, your rank advances. Unfortunately, you can't do this on this version in Shockwave, and there is no mention of this, so the player is left wondering. Change my rating to one star. :-(
