Under 2 mins today, but felt I should have been much faster than I was. 1:30 for 30/10 - Tivor, what happens to you on those old ones? You are fairly consistently beating me on the current, but the archive one seems to get you every time!

I hit 1:48 on the 22/10 game - normal time for me. I totally agree that the thought process is different. I occasionally re-play on regular, just to see, and the tactics you use in expert are not there at all.

Well done on the score lynnipoo - it certainly should have charted. Congrats on the PB, tevob1. In the top right hand corner there is a box showing the time remaining - you always start with 5 mins. When I finished yesterday I had 4:15 left. I don't know how the scoring relates to the time, though...

Way to go rhonndie! At 1:30 am BST (which is about 8:30pm New York Time) you are #6. I have just played after a few drinks with friends and am way down in the 50's. At least I still broke 40K - that is now (after a long time of trying) my 'bad' score. My time switches back tonight, so hour less sleep for me - oh dear!

No, nolagame, there is nothing but straighforward time. There is no distinction between expert or regular, and no penalties for wrong clicks or using hints. Most people feel there should at least be a seperate scoreboard for the 2 modes, but so far there isn't. I prefer expert as I like the challenge more, many people like to play regular. On expert I generally get between 1:30 and 2mins. More than 2 mins is a bad day (although it happens more than I like!) and I think I have once had below 1:00

Hi again... If there is a box of 4 the same, or 2 and 2, in a corner, then the corner one and the one diagonal to it must be black. This can also help in the middle if there are some other black squares around as you have to be sure not to block anything off. I know these things can be hard to picture - I hope it makes some sense! Feel free to jump in folks!

Hi nolagame, welcome to Hitori. There was discussion a while back about tactics - so much is automatic it is hard to think! If you have 3 or more of a number in a row or column, with two touching and the others apart, the apart ones need blacked out. If you get the same number but seperated by one that is different, like a triple but with something else in the middle, the middle number must stay. There's more ......

Hi all. Been away for a week, but luckily my brain doesn't seem to have totally stopped working! Glad you weren't badly affected by the storms, Valdaze. We, too, have had many large autumn days this week. I managed to play once, while at my sister's and hadn't before appreciated what a difference having a slow PC could make to the time it takes... I had to click, wait a second for the number to appear, click, wait etc...

Hi folks. Glad to see all the HDTs here! numbernut mentioned the shift key - if you hold down the shift key when you click, the number goes straight to black or back, without going through the 'confirmed' stage. That saves quite a few seconds over the whole board. There is no penalty for 'wrong moves' like in Hidato. There is also no penalty for using the 'with hints' board. I prefer the hintless version, as it is more of a challenge. Hope you enjoy!

Hi rhonndie - I hope your grandmother is okay. It can be very scary when something happens at that age. I live in Scotland, and BST is British Summer Time! In a few weeks we'll go back to GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). Mostly we are 5 hours ahead of New York, 8 ahead of California - for a week or two around the time changes in spring and autumn that can vary.

Well, something weird is going on here - I guess sausage gloop is better brain food than I gave it credit for! I'm sitting at #1 (but there are no maximum scores yet). Thanks for the advice to just go for it - I did take some risks and they paid off. Sadly, I'm not a fish fan. I love food, and wish I could appreciate what most other food lovers do love, but I just can't enjoy any seafood.

All those warnings and I still messed up! Still, I'm in good company - lots of regulars way down today it seems. The number of stars is related to the size of the board rather that the actual 'difficulty' level. There are very often 3 and 4 star puzzles that are much easier than 1 or 2 star ones.

Not quite, MOLLYMOO, I hit 32 seconds. It should have been easier than yesterday though. Tivor, your score for yesterday was there when I played later on in the day - you were still within the top 10 or 15, if I recall rightly.

I agree, lucky3momm. I too play the 'expert' version, because I just don't get the same sense of achievement from the regular (hints on) version. I now consistently do the expert in under 2 mins - so stick in there!

seventy70, don't worry! Some of the very top scorers have found ways around the fact that you can only post your first score, and in fact they practise until they get it fast enough. There are just some geniuses out there too, though! I have twice managed maximum score (on very simple puzzles!), but when I've done it so have many, many others.

I like it because it improves my observation skills, requires thought (mostly because you have to be careful not to pick a hand that is too good!) and provides a challenge. I enjoy tracking my performance against my own benchmarks and against the scores of other regular players, too. It is the first of my Daily Plays, being a kind of warm up for me.

Yes, bracks6, the star rating refers only to the size of the puzzle. There are many times when a 4 or even 5 star is a lot simpler than a smaller 2 or 3 star. It just depends on the numbers you begin with...

Like most games, chiwawa, it takes time to get into his one. Once you get used to the way it works then it is a good challenge. You can start by trying to complete in the time, and build up to trying to complete with, say, 4 minutes still on the clock

Just re-played to try to see the effect of 'Check' on your score. On my re-played game did it in 40secs (so losing 20 points for time) and used check once (with no actual errors) - and scored 20 points less than the max! It seems that if you use check when you have no mistakes it doesn't affect your score. It did tell me I had failed to get a perfect game, though.

thisisit29, It usually helps to dot around the board, sometimes work backwards, or do bits in the middle. Wrongly placed numbers cost you more points than taking extra time, generally.

genthem, it's not where you actually rank but getting the actual maximum score that is the issue. I have often been #1, but only because I played before anyone else! If you are the first person to get the maximum possible score then you will not only rank #1 but will stay there. The second person to get it will be #2 and so on.

Well, for my part I do the puzzle once, and my rating varies wildly from top 20 to the 60s, 70s and below! I think you'll find most folk outside the top handful are doing the puzzle for their own benefit rather than a top score.
