How can I optimize my Windows computer and software to work best with Shockwave?
  • Check your display settings. We recommend a display resolution of at least 800x600 pixels (1024x768 is recommended) and 16 bit depth. You can change your display settings by right-clicking on the desktop and choosing Properties from the pop-up menu. Click the Settings tab in the Display Properties dialog box. If the setting indicated under Screen area is less than 800x600 pixels, move the sliders toward "More" until the resolution meets our minimum requirements. Colors should be set to High Color (16 bit). To implement these settings, click OK.
  • Exit unused applications. You can exit an application by choosing Exit from the file menu.

How can I optimize my Mac OS computer and software to work best with Shockwave?
  • Ensure you have at least 64 MB of RAM installed in your computer. While most Shockwave titles will work with less memory, more RAM will be required by more complex titles.
  • Check your monitor settings:
    1. Choose Control Panels-> Monitors from the Apple Menu.
    2. Set the Resolution to at least 800x600.
    3. Set the Color Depth to Thousands (Macintosh G4 users should use Millions)
NOTE: Some computers do not support large screen sizes with higher color settings. In this case, try reducing your Color setting to 256. This will give you larger screen size options.
  • Allocate at least 25 MB of RAM to your Web browser (America Online, Microsoft Internet Explorer, or Netscape Navigator).
    1. Locate your Web browser on your hard drive. Click once on the icon.
NOTE: You must locate the application itself, not an alias.
    2. Choose Get Info -> Memory from the File menu.
    3. in the Info dialog box, indicate 25,000 for Preferred Size.
    4. Click OK.
  • Quit unused applications. Press Command-Q to quit an application.

Tips for troubleshooting Shockwave

Shockwave isn't loading properly. Is it the site or is my Shockwave Player not working?

In most cases, this is only a temporary connection issue. Trying again later should resolve it. If it persists, it's likely because Shockwave Player is only partially installed, damaged, or has a mix of components from different versions. Any of these situations can be fixed by uninstalling, then reinstalling the Shockwave Player.

You can download an uninstaller for Mac OS and Windows:

After you've uninstalled Shockwave Player, you can reinstall it.

I'm having trouble downloading Shockwave Player.

An earlier version of Shockwave Player is pre-installed with most popular Internet browsers. Sometimes, damage to the Shockwave Player that's already installed can prevent your upgrading to the latest Shockwave Player. This can usually be fixed by uninstalling, then reinstalling the Shockwave Player.

In some cases, it's actually the browser which is preventing the successful installation of Shockwave Player. In such instances, simply reinstalling Shockwave Player may not work. Reinstalling or updating the browser, then installing Shockwave Player should take care of this.

Other Issues

Due to a variety of reasons, there are numerous potential problems you may encounter. If you are having general problems connecting to the internet or keeping your connection, try one or each of the following:

  • Disconnect from and reconnect to the Internet.

Sometimes I don't hear anything when I check out the titles at Shockwave. What can I do to hear sound at Shockwave on my Windows computer?

We've found that most sound issues are the result of an outdated driver for the sound card. Make sure you have the latest driver for your sound card. Sometimes, the sound issues are related to the way Windows handles sound. Windows prioritizes .wav sounds in the following way:

Applications playing .wav sounds will mask sounds played by other applications that are subsequently launched. You can work around this issue by closing Shockwave or Flash applications while you listen to RealPlayer, and vice versa. Upgrading to the latest version of Shockwave Player should resolve most sound issues.
